Christmas car rental in New Zealand, compared in seconds
Christmas through New Year is the busiest fortnight on NZ roads. Pick the right supplier on the right dates, lock a price in before the December squeeze, and start your summer trip the moment you land.
Christmas in New Zealand is the height of summer, and the country drives. Aucklanders head for the Coromandel, Wellingtonians for Marlborough, Cantabrians for Wanaka, and overseas visitors land into AKL, ZQN and CHC by the planeload. From late December through Waitangi Day every rental fleet is out on the road, which is why prices climb sharply and the cheapest cars vanish first.
Car Rental Hero is a comparison engine, not a rental supplier. We line up live prices from every major company serving NZ (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Thrifty, GoRentals, Apex, Jucy, Ezi and a few more) so you can see the real cheapest Christmas rate for your dates without bouncing between ten different supplier sites.
Booking 8–12 weeks ahead is the move that actually moves the price. After mid-October the cheapest classes start disappearing; by December you're choosing from what's left, not what you want.— The Editors
What to expect on this holiday
The Christmas / New Year window we track runs December 24 through January 5. Most international flights into NZ land in that fortnight, and most domestic travellers leave home for at least a few days. Demand spikes earliest on the December 23–24 pickup window and again on December 27–30 as people pivot to the South Island for New Year.
Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown handle the bulk of arrivals. Wellington stays comparatively cheap because most Wellingtonians own a car. If your dates are flexible, picking up December 26 or 27 instead of December 23 or 24 often saves NZ$100–200 over a week at AKL.

Popular vehicles for this holiday
Christmas trips skew larger: more passengers, more luggage, more long-haul SH1 driving. Here's what travellers actually book through the holiday.
SUV rentals
The default Christmas rental. Higher driving position, room for two large suitcases plus a chilly bin, comfortable on a 5–6 hour drive. Good fit for the Coromandel run, Hawke's Bay, or the Christchurch to Wanaka route.
Example models: Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail
7 seater rentals
The Christmas family pick. Three rows, big boot when the third row is folded, easy to fit three child seats. Often sells out at AKL and CHC by early December, so book this one first if you need it.
Example models: Kia Carnival, Toyota Sienna, Hyundai Staria
Economy car rentals
The cheapest Christmas option. Tight for four adults plus a week's gear, but fine for couples and solo travellers. Fuel economy adds up on long Christmas drives.
Example models: Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i20, Suzuki Swift, Mazda 3

Common questions about holiday rentals
When should I book a Christmas rental car in NZ?+
8–12 weeks before pickup is the sweet spot. Suppliers release Christmas inventory in late August or September with introductory rates. By mid-October the cheapest classes (economy, compact) start selling out at AKL, CHC and ZQN. By December you're usually choosing from what's left, not what you want.
How much more expensive is Christmas car rental in NZ?+
A lot more than most people guess. In our May 26 sample, cross-supplier SUV rates at the four main airports ran roughly 2–3× a late-October baseline — AKL +187%, CHC +179%, WLG +178%, ZQN +121%. ZQN looks 'mildest' only because its late-October baseline is already lifted by ski-tail demand.
Can I pick up on December 26 and save money?+
Often, yes. December 26–27 sits in a brief lull between the pre-Christmas departure rush (Dec 22–24) and the New Year ski/lake migration (Dec 28–30). NZ$100–200 on a week's rental at AKL is realistic, depending on supplier and class.
Are one-way Christmas rentals available?+
Yes. One-way drops between major NZ airports are available year-round. One-way fees climb at Christmas — typically NZ$80–250 between cities, often more for ZQN→AKL. The compare results show the one-way fee per supplier so you can factor it in.
Do I need to book extras (child seats, GPS) earlier at Christmas?+
Child seats, yes — they're the first extra to sell out. Most suppliers stock 6–12 seats per branch, and Christmas burns through that fast. GPS is rarely the constraint because most travellers use Google Maps on a phone.
Can I cancel my Christmas rental if my flight gets delayed?+
Depends on the supplier. Many flexible-rate Christmas rentals allow free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. After that you're usually locked in. Suppliers will normally hold a Christmas-booked car 1–2 hours past scheduled pickup for a delayed flight if you call ahead.
Is it cheaper to pick up in the city rather than the airport at Christmas?+
Sometimes. A CBD branch can save 10–20% on the daily rate by skipping the airport surcharge. Trade-off: NZ$30–50 for a taxi or SkyDrive bus from AKL. For rentals of 5+ days, the math usually works.
Free cancellation matters even more at Christmas
Christmas plans change. Flight delays, weather, sick travellers — book a supplier with free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup and you can rebook later if your plans shift. Our compare results flag the cancellation window for each supplier so you can see at a glance which rentals are flexible and which are non-refundable.
