What to expect on this holiday
The Waitangi rental window we track is February 5–8: the long weekend around the public holiday. North Island demand dominates; the South Island sees a much milder lift.
Auckland CBD branches stay cheaper than airport pickups all weekend. Bay of Islands pickups (Kerikeri) sell out fastest because the local fleet is small. Our May 26 sample has Feb 8 AKL eco at $118/day (Ezi), roughly equivalent to late-March shoulder — the headline Waitangi premium at AKL is mild. Live compare for Kerikeri shows the sharper local lift.

Common questions about holiday rentals
Is car rental more expensive on Waitangi Day weekend?+
At AKL: not by much in our sample — Feb 8 and late-March shoulder were essentially flat. Kerikeri (Bay of Islands) tends to be sharper because the local fleet is much smaller; we don't have direct data on that, so live compare is your friend.
Should I pick up in Auckland or Kerikeri for a Bay of Islands trip?+
Auckland is cheaper and has more suppliers but adds a 3-hour drive each way. Kerikeri is faster and more expensive. Most travellers pick AKL.
Is Waitangi Day a busy weekend for rentals everywhere?+
Mainly a North Island story. AKL and Kerikeri see most of the lift. South Island airports are quieter for this long weekend.
Can I cancel my Waitangi rental if cyclone weather is forecast?+
Depends on the supplier. Many flexible-rate Waitangi rentals allow free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. Weather alone isn't grounds for free cancellation after that window.
Cyclones can hit Northland in February
Cyclone-tail rain events occasionally sweep through Northland in early February. Pick a supplier with free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup so you can re-book if your plans wash out. Compare results flag each supplier's cancellation window.
