If you're landing into Auckland over Christmas, your rental car is probably the next thing you book after the flight. AKL handled close to 19 million passengers in calendar 2025, and the fortnight from Christmas Eve through January 5 is its single busiest stretch. Every major rental brand operates here: in-terminal majors like Hertz, Avis and Budget; and off-airport value brands like Ezi, GoRentals, Apex and Jucy that shuttle in from depots a few minutes away.

We're a comparison engine, not a rental supplier. The compare tool above pulls live Christmas rates from every supplier serving AKL, side by side, with the all-in price upfront.

AKL's rental-car building sits opposite the Domestic Terminal. Even at Christmas pickup, every in-terminal supplier is a two-minute walk from arrivals; off-airport shuttles add 15–20 minutes.— The Editors
01The travel pattern

What to expect on this holiday

Auckland is the default Christmas pickup for North Island trips. The Coromandel beaches, Bay of Islands, Waiheke, Rotorua, Hawke's Bay and Taupo are all within a 1–4 hour drive, and most overseas visitors landing into NZ for Christmas come through AKL. That's why fleet utilisation peaks here first.

Our May 26 sample shows the cheapest cross-supplier SUV at AKL jumps from around $62/day late October to about $178/day in Christmas week (+187%). Economy is similar: $62 → $156 (+152%). The cheapest in-terminal supplier at Christmas was Budget; the cheapest overall (with shuttle) was GoRentals at $156/day economy, with Ezi close behind at $168.

03What people book

Popular vehicles for this holiday

AKL Christmas picks lean toward longer-trip vehicles. Most rentals from Auckland over the holidays cover at least one inter-region drive. Here's how each class fits.

01

SUV rentals

The default AKL Christmas pickup. Comfortable for the 2–3 hour Coromandel run, the 5-hour drive to Hawke's Bay, or wineries on Waiheke (via car ferry). Higher driving position helps on the winding road to Piha and the Coromandel coast.

Example models: Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail

02

7 seater rentals

The AKL family rental of choice over Christmas, mostly for the AKL → Tauranga / Mount Maunganui / Coromandel summer loop. Books out 6–10 weeks ahead at major suppliers.

Example models: Kia Carnival, Toyota Sienna, Hyundai Staria

03

Economy car rentals

The cheapest AKL Christmas option. Tight for four adults plus a week of beach gear, but fine for couples and solo travellers exploring Auckland, the Hauraki Gulf and the upper North Island.

Example models: Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i20, Suzuki Swift, Mazda 3

Common questions about holiday rentals

What's the cheapest Christmas car rental at Auckland Airport?+

Prices change daily through November and early December. In our May 26 sample, the cheapest AKL Christmas-week economy rate was about $156/day (GoRentals), with Ezi at $168 and Budget at $165. The Compare tool above pulls live rates for your exact dates.

When should I book my AKL Christmas rental?+

Mid-September through mid-October is the sweet spot. By early November the cheapest economy and compact classes start selling out for Dec 22–24 pickups at AKL. By December, only the most expensive remaining classes are left.

Is in-terminal pickup worth it at AKL Christmas?+

If you're landing on a late-evening flight (after 9pm) or with small children, in-terminal pickup is usually worth the small premium because you skip the shuttle queue and the depot wait. For mid-day arrivals with light luggage, the 15–20 minute shuttle to an off-airport depot is a fair trade for $80–150 of savings over a week.

Can I drive my AKL rental to Queenstown?+

Yes. One-way drops from AKL to ZQN are available at most major suppliers, but Christmas one-way fees climb sharply (often NZ$200–400). It's often cheaper to fly Auckland → Queenstown and rent fresh at ZQN. The compare results show one-way fees per supplier.

Do I need snow chains from AKL?+

Not for North Island Christmas trips. Chains are virtually never needed north of Taupo in summer. If you're driving from AKL all the way to Queenstown or the Lindis Pass region between Christmas and New Year, request chains at booking; not every AKL branch stocks them.

Will my AKL Christmas rental have a child seat available?+

Yes, but reserve at booking. Christmas child-seat inventory at every AKL branch is finite (most stock 6–12 seats). If you need two or more, book at least 4–6 weeks ahead. Bringing your own seat from home is the most reliable option for January arrivals.

Can I extend my AKL Christmas rental at the desk?+

Usually yes, but availability drops fast through Christmas week. If every car in your class is already booked for the next renter, extensions are limited. Call the desk 24–48 hours before your scheduled return rather than waiting until the day of.

07Cancellation & flex

Flexible AKL Christmas rentals: what to look for

Flight delays out of Sydney, Singapore and LAX are common across Christmas, and snow-disrupted Northern Hemisphere flights land late. Pick a supplier with free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup and an explicit late-pickup grace period on day-of. AKL desks will usually hold a Christmas-booked car for 1–2 hours past scheduled pickup if you call ahead. In our experience, major brands tend to be more forgiving here than off-airport value brands.
