Queenstown Airport: a quick overview
Queenstown Airport (IATA: ZQN) is New Zealand's fourth-busiest airport and the only international gateway in the southern lakes, handling about 2.4 million passengers a year. It sits 8 km east of central Queenstown in Frankton at Sir Henry Wigley Drive — roughly a 10-minute drive in light traffic, longer at ski-season weekends.
ZQN operates from a single integrated terminal serving both domestic and trans-Tasman international flights, which keeps wayfinding simple. Inside you'll find free Wi-Fi, a café, currency exchange, parents' rooms, ski racks at baggage claim in winter, and an i-SITE information desk. Rental car desks are clustered on the ground floor near the domestic baggage carousel.
Car rental suppliers
Around ten major brands operate at ZQN — most with desks inside the terminal, a few from off-airport depots in Frankton reached by a short shuttle. Here's a quick read on what each supplier is best for. Use the compare tool above to see current prices across all of them at once.
Car rental desks at Queenstown Airport
Every major car rental brand operates at Queenstown Airport. Use the map and cards below to find your pickup desk, then compare current prices from all suppliers in one search.
Where to pick up your rental
Most travellers pick up directly at the airport. Suppliers split into two groups: those with a counter inside the terminal, and a smaller number running a free shuttle from a nearby Frankton depot.
On-airport rentals (inside the terminal)
↓Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Thrifty, Sixt, Enterprise, Alamo and Dollar operate counters on the ground floor of the terminal near the domestic baggage carousel — a 30-second walk from your bags. Follow the 'Rental Cars' signs. Vehicles are parked in the rental car park directly across the forecourt, a 1-minute covered walk from the desks, so most travellers are heading toward town within 10–15 minutes of finishing paperwork.
Off-airport rentals (shuttle pickup)
↓Value-tier suppliers — Apex (32 Lucas Place), Jucy, GoRentals, Ezi — operate from Frankton depots a few minutes' drive from the terminal. After collecting your bags, follow the 'Rental Car Shuttles' signs to the marked shuttle bay outside the terminal. Shuttles run every 10–15 minutes during business hours; allow 20–30 minutes total from terminal exit to keys-in-hand. Off-airport pickups are usually cheaper, especially on longer rentals.
Town pickup as an alternative
↓If your accommodation is in central Queenstown and you don't need a car for the first day or two, picking up later from a town branch can save 10–15% on the daily rate by avoiding the airport surcharge. Trade-off: you'll pay NZ$25–40 for an Uber, taxi or Orbus route 1 from ZQN into town — the public bus runs every 15 minutes.
Popular vehicle types at this airport
Queenstown Airport rentals span every vehicle category, but the choice often comes down to season and where you're driving. Here's how each option fits typical Southern Alps trips.
SUV rentals
The most popular choice at ZQN. Higher ground clearance helps on the Crown Range, the Skippers Canyon turn-offs and the unsealed final stretches to Mt Aspiring viewpoints. Plenty of boot space for luggage plus ski or bike gear.
Example models: Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail
7 seater rentals
Ideal for families, ski groups or multi-generational travel between Queenstown, Wanaka and the ski fields. Big boot when the third row is folded — useful for boots, helmets and oversized luggage from a Milford trip.
Example models: Kia Carnival, Toyota Sienna, Hyundai Staria
Ski trip cars
AWD vehicles with winter tyres or chains supplied, sized for a couple or small group heading to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables or Cardrona. Some suppliers package ski racks as a free add-on between June and September.
Example models: Subaru Outback, Mitsubishi Outlander AWD, Toyota Highlander AWD
How to pick up and return your rental
Picking up your Queenstown Airport rental is straightforward — the single-terminal layout means the rental desks are visible from baggage claim. This guide walks through the process step by step.
Before you arrive
- Check your supplier's email confirmation for on-airport vs off-airport pickup
- Have ready: booking confirmation, driver's licence (and IDP/translation if required), the credit card used to book, and your passport
- If renting between June and September and heading to a ski field, the Crown Range or the Milford road, request snow chains in advance — not all suppliers keep them stocked at ZQN
- If you plan to drive over the Crown Range or Lindis Pass with a campervan or large SUV, ask the supplier about height/weight limits during chain-required conditions
Arrive at the terminal
Clear immigration (international) or step straight off the plane (domestic) and collect your bags from the carousel. Both arrival flows funnel into the same compact ground-floor area — the rental desks are signposted overhead and visible immediately.
On-airport pickup
Walk to the rental desks beside the baggage carousel. Present your driver's licence, credit card and booking reference. Once paperwork is signed, the agent will direct you to your vehicle in the rental car park — a 1-minute walk across the forecourt from the terminal exit.
Off-airport pickup
Follow the 'Rental Car Shuttles' signage to the marked shuttle bay outside the terminal. Tell the driver your supplier's name. The depot is usually a 3–7 minute drive within Frankton (Apex is at 32 Lucas Place). Sign your paperwork and pick up keys at the depot.
Inspect your vehicle before you leave
Walk around the car with the agent. Photograph any pre-existing scratches, dents or wheel damage on your phone. Confirm fuel level, mileage, the tyre/spare situation and — in winter — that the chains in the boot match the wheel size. This 2-minute step protects you against disputed damage charges on return.
If the desk is unstaffed
Late-night and early-morning arrivals sometimes find a desk closed. Look for posted instructions and a contact number — most suppliers operate a short on-call delay rather than full 24-hour staffing. After-hours key drop boxes are available in the returns area for late returns.
Returning your rental
On the return: refuel within 2 km of the airport (BP and Z stations on Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway are the standard return-fuel stops), follow the 'Rental Car Return' signs to your supplier's drop-off bay, and either hand keys to staff or use the after-hours key drop box. Off-airport returns include a courtesy shuttle back to the terminal — allow at least 45 minutes between drop-off and your check-in time.
Local driving tips
Crown Range — NZ's highest sealed road
The SH89 Crown Range between Queenstown and Wanaka climbs to 1,076 m and is the highest sealed road in New Zealand. It's a stunning drive in summer but exposed to ice, snow and wind from May to October. Check NZTA road conditions before leaving and avoid the Cardrona–Queenstown stretch at night in winter unless your tyres are appropriate.
Snow chains in winter
Between June and September, snow chains may be required on the Crown Range, Coronet Peak Road and The Remarkables ski road. Some suppliers include chains free in winter; others charge NZ$10–25 per day. Always fit chains before the warning signs, not after — and practice once in daylight before you need them in the dark.
Skippers Canyon and unsealed roads are usually excluded
Most rental contracts exclude unsealed/gravel roads like Skippers Canyon Road, Macetown and the upper Mavora Lakes track. Driving these can void insurance entirely. Check your contract's 'restricted roads' list — and if you really want to see Skippers, book a 4WD tour rather than driving yourself.
Drive on the left
New Zealand drives on the left. Spend the first 5 minutes in the rental car park getting familiar with the indicators (often on the right of the steering column) before joining the road. Most accidents involving overseas drivers happen in the first hour after pickup — and Queenstown's tight lakeside roads are unforgiving.
Milford Sound is a full day
Milford Sound is a 4-hour drive each way from Queenstown via SH6 to Te Anau and SH94 onwards. Fill up at Te Anau — there's no fuel between Te Anau and Milford. The Homer Tunnel uses a one-way light system in summer (queues of 10–15 min) and may require chains in winter. Aim to leave Queenstown by 7am if you're driving and cruising in one day.
Speed limits and one-lane bridges
100 km/h is the maximum on open roads, 50 km/h in Queenstown and Frankton, and 30 km/h around schools at start/finish times. Several SH6 bridges south of Queenstown and on the Glenorchy road are one-lane — the arrow sign tells you who has priority. Slow down and never assume.
Where to go from this airport
Queenstown is a compact launchpad — almost every famous corner of the Southern Lakes and Fiordland is within day-trip range. Here are the places most rental car travellers head to from ZQN.
Arrowtown
Restored 1860s gold-rush village 20 minutes from the airport via SH6. Heritage main street, autumn-colour walks along the Arrow River, and the Chinese miners' settlement. Easy half-day stop on the way to Wanaka.
Wanaka via the Crown Range
SH89 climbs the Crown Range over the highest sealed road in New Zealand, with the Cardrona Hotel and ski field on the way down. Wanaka itself sits on a quieter lake — great for a 1–2 day extension.
Glenorchy & the Routeburn
One of NZ's most scenic short drives — the SH6 / Glenorchy-Queenstown Road skirts Lake Wakatipu past Bennetts Bluff lookout. From Glenorchy you can reach the Routeburn Track trailhead, Paradise and Mt Aspiring National Park edges.
Milford Sound
Via SH6 and SH94 through Te Anau and the Homer Tunnel. Fjordland cliffs, waterfalls and dolphins — a long but extraordinary day. Most travellers either drive both ways or take a cruise+coach package out of Te Anau.
Coronet Peak & The Remarkables
Queenstown's two main ski fields. Coronet Peak Road climbs 20 km from the airport; The Remarkables Skifield Road is steeper and chains-mandatory in winter. Both have free park-and-ride buses from town during the season.
Cromwell & Central Otago wineries
SH6 over the Kawarau Gorge — past AJ Hackett's original bungy bridge — into Cromwell's lake-edge fruit country. Continue to Bannockburn or the Felton Road wine area for some of NZ's top pinot noir.
Frequently asked questions
What's the cheapest car rental at Queenstown Airport?+
Prices change daily based on supplier availability and season. The Compare button above shows current rates from every supplier serving ZQN so you see the cheapest available option for your specific dates — not a stale advertised price. As a rough guide, economy rentals start around NZ$45–60 per day in shoulder season and NZ$80–130 per day at peak (ski season weekends and Dec–Feb).
Do I need a 4WD or AWD in Queenstown?+
For summer travel and sealed-road sightseeing — including Wanaka via the Crown Range, Glenorchy, Cromwell and the Milford drive — a 2WD car is fine. For winter ski trips, the road to Coronet Peak and The Remarkables requires chains in chain-required conditions regardless of drivetrain; AWD makes it easier but isn't legally mandatory. The compare results above let you filter by drivetrain.
Are snow chains included with Queenstown Airport rentals?+
Some suppliers include chains in winter (June–September) at no extra cost; others charge NZ$10–25 per day. The supplier's chain policy is shown in the comparison results — look for the 'chains included' tag. Note: in chain-required conditions on the ski roads, driving without chains is illegal and will void your insurance.
Is the rental car desk inside the terminal or off-site?+
Major brands (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Thrifty, Sixt, Enterprise, Alamo, Dollar) have desks on the ground floor of the terminal beside the domestic baggage carousel — a 30-second walk from your bags. The rental car park is directly across the forecourt. Budget-tier brands (Apex, Jucy, GoRentals, Ezi) operate from off-airport depots in Frankton with a free shuttle from outside the terminal.
Can I drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back in a day?+
Yes — most travellers do it as a long day. It's a 4-hour drive each way via Te Anau plus 2 hours for the cruise. Fill up at Te Anau (no fuel between Te Anau and Milford), allow time for Homer Tunnel queues in summer, and be prepared for chain-required conditions in winter. Many travellers prefer to overnight at Te Anau to shorten the driving day.
Can I take my Queenstown rental to Christchurch or Auckland one-way?+
Yes — most suppliers allow one-way rentals from ZQN to CHC (NZ$50–150 fee, no ferry required) or AKL (NZ$200–500 fee, including a Cook Strait ferry crossing). The compare results show the one-way fee per supplier. If your route is south-to-north, check whether the supplier requires advance approval for the inter-island ferry — some budget brands prohibit it entirely.
Can I drive my rental on Skippers Canyon Road?+
No — virtually every supplier at ZQN excludes Skippers Canyon Road, Macetown Road and other unsealed back-country roads from the rental contract. Driving these voids your insurance and can leave you liable for the full vehicle value. To see Skippers, book a 4WD tour with a licensed operator instead.
Do I need an international driving permit?+
If your licence is in English (UK, US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, etc.) you can drive in NZ for up to 12 months on your home licence. If your licence is in another language, you'll need either an international driving permit (IDP) or a certified English translation accepted by NZTA. Bring both your home licence and the IDP or translation when you pick up.
Can I rent at Queenstown Airport if I'm under 25?+
Yes, but most suppliers add a young driver surcharge (typically NZ$5–25 per day) for drivers aged 21–24. A few suppliers rent to 18-year-olds with a higher surcharge. The compare results above flag age-based fees per supplier so you can see the all-in cost.
What's the busiest time at Queenstown Airport for rental pickup?+
Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings during ski season (mid-June to early October), Chinese New Year, and the Christmas/New Year holiday window. Off-airport depot shuttles can run 15–20 minutes during peaks. On-airport suppliers move faster but cost more. Booking ahead for these windows is essential — same-day inventory often sells out.
