The New Zealand roads your rental insurance won't cover
Some of the country's best-known drives are written out of rental contracts by name. Drive one and you can be liable for the whole car, whatever cover you paid for.
Rental agreements in New Zealand do something unusual: they name specific roads. Drive one of them and you have done more than void your excess reduction. With several operators you have accepted liability for the full value of the vehicle. It is the single most expensive mistake a visitor can make here, and it is almost never mentioned at the counter.
The lists are shorter than you would expect, and they disagree with each other. Skippers Canyon Road near Queenstown is named by nearly everyone. Ball Hut Road at Aoraki/Mt Cook is named by some, while others exclude the same area under a different name. Hertz and Ezi call it Tasman Valley Road beyond the picnic area, which is the same drive. Avis and Budget name only two roads in the entire country.
That variation matters. A road being absent from your operator's list is not the same as it being safe: every contract also has a catch-all for anything 'not officially designated as a road', for beaches, and for river and stream crossings. But if a road is named, there is no argument to be had.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a rental car on Skippers Canyon Road?+
No. It is named as prohibited or uncovered by nearly every operator we checked, including Avis, Budget, Hertz, Apex, GO Rentals, Ezi, Omega and JUCY. It is a narrow unsealed cliff road and it is the most consistently excluded road in New Zealand rental contracts. If you want to see Skippers Canyon, take a commercial tour.
What about Ball Hut Road at Mt Cook?+
GO Rentals, JUCY and Ezi name it directly. Hertz and Ezi also exclude the same area as 'Tasman Valley Road beyond the picnic area/parking lot near Mount Cook', which is the same drive under a different name. Apex, Avis and Budget do not name it, but their general unsealed and off-road terms may still apply.
Is Ninety Mile Beach off-limits in a rental car?+
Yes, everywhere. It is a legal road in New Zealand, which is exactly why operators name it: it is also a tidal beach. Every operator we checked excludes beaches generally, and most name Ninety Mile Beach specifically. Saltwater and sand damage sit outside every excess-reduction product, so there is no cover to buy for it.
My operator doesn't name a road I want to drive. Am I covered?+
Not necessarily. Every contract we read also excludes anything not officially designated as a road, plus beaches, riverbeds, stream crossings, farm tracks and 4WD tracks. Some operators go much further: JUCY and Hertz prohibit unsealed roads generally. Silence on a specific road is not the same as permission. See our gravel road guide for the general position.
What happens if I drive a prohibited road?+
It depends on the operator, and the range is wide. On Hertz's current terms a prohibited use means you are liable up to the full value of the vehicle and you lose the benefit of any protection you bought. Ezi's agreement puts liability at up to $50,000 where a breach caused the damage. Others revert you to the full standard excess. In no case does the cover you paid for still apply.
Does Crown Range Road count?+
No operator we checked prohibits it. Crown Range is sealed, and it is New Zealand's highest main road. The restriction is seasonal rather than contractual: chains are mandatory on it in snow conditions, and GO Rentals publishes that requirement explicitly. Driving it without chains when they are required is a separate breach on several contracts.
