The window we track is the 4-day stretch starting the Saturday before the public holiday. ZQN is the centre of demand, with CHC and AKL feeding ski-bound travellers driving south.
In our May 26 sample, June 1 ZQN cheapest SUV across suppliers was about $34/day (GoRentals) and economy was about $35. That's below the late-October baseline, not above it. Real ski-season pricing kicks in later in June and through July. Booking 6–8 weeks ahead is still smart because chain-equipped 4WDs in popular brands sell out fast even if the headline rate looks modest.
