Ten spring nights, one Christchurch City road trip waiting to start
Late September into early October is spring in Canterbury. Blossom lines the Avon, the Port Hills turn green, and the Southern Alps still hold fresh snow on clear mornings. It's a lovely time to arrive, and the National Day holiday brings plenty of visitors keen to see the South Island at their own pace. Most of them do it with a Christchurch City car rental, since the best of this region (Akaroa, Hanmer Springs, Arthur's Pass) sits well outside the city centre.

What did show up was mostly hybrids (four of five) with one petrol, plus four five-seaters and a single seven-seater. A hybrid is a good fit for a 10 night trip with long highway days, and a five-seater will take two big suitcases if you fold the seats down. Spring mornings on the Canterbury plains can be frosty and the alpine passes can see sleet, so check road conditions before you head for the mountains. If you land at the airport on a holiday weekend, book an early pickup slot and skip the queue at the counter.
