Sixt has the lowest price in the scan at $939.55, though it offered only one car, while GO Rentals has the cheapest overall deal at $910 and 16 listings to pick from. Europcar (10 listings, average $1531.44) and Budget (9 listings, average $1848.85) sit in the middle, and Hertz, Thrifty and Ezi each showed a single car well above $2800. Compare the two or three cheapest options on the same day, because the gap from cheapest to dearest is 4.18 times.
Most of the fleet is a 5-seater (38 of 50), so a Corolla or Yaris will comfortably carry two travellers and their bags, but families of five or more should check the seven-seater listings early. Early October in the South Island can still bring frosty mornings and snow on the high passes, so a hybrid or an SUV with decent tyres is a sensible pick if Arthur's Pass or Lake Tekapo is on the list. Pick up in the morning, when the airport rental desks are quieter before the midday flights land, and you will be on State Highway 1 with the mountains ahead of you before the traffic builds.
