Most of the fleet seats five, which suits two couples or a family with beach gear, but bigger groups should book early because only 9 listings seat seven. Hybrids are everywhere (25 listings), and they stretch a tank a long way if you're driving Auckland to the Bay of Islands and back. The roads out of the airport clog on the days either side of Christmas and New Year, so collect your car before lunch or after the evening rush. A Compact or Economy car handles tar seal and holiday traffic comfortably, and you only need a 4x4 if your plans include gravel roads.
