Alamo ($1,259.24 average) and GO Rentals ($1,352.56) swing widely, with some quotes topping $2,600. A sensible booker checks Sixt first, then compares Thrifty and Europcar for the same car class before paying a premium anywhere else.
Most of the fleet is five-seaters (68 of 93), with 40 standard-fuel cars, 18 hybrids and 15 diesels, so a Corolla Hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid will cover plenty of kilometres cheaply. In June and July, consider AWD if you are heading to the central plateau or the Queenstown side, where frosty mornings and wet mountain roads are routine. Pack soft bags instead of hard cases for a compact boot, and pick up your keys in daylight, because it is dark by about five in the evening.
