Holiday hire prices surge at Auckland Airport
The 2026 Christmas–New Year week is one of the busiest travel periods on the New Zealand calendar, with thousands of Kiwis flying into Auckland for summer holidays. Demand for rental cars far outstrips supply during this peak season, driving prices to their highest levels of the year. Our analysis of 129 listings at Auckland Domestic Airport shows the true cost of hitting the road from 28 December to 4 January. Travellers face a highly competitive market where booking early can mean the difference between a bargain and a blowout.
Pricing varies dramatically across suppliers, with median weekly rates sitting at $1,746.07 and the spread between the cheapest and most expensive bookings reaching nearly five times the base price. Budget-friendly operators like Apex and Sixt keep average costs between $1,120 and $1,360, while premium brands such as Europcar and Hertz charge upwards of $2,000 on average. The range within each supplier is also notable — Europcar listings alone span from $1,555 to over $4,000 depending on the vehicle category.
The Auckland Domestic Airport fleet is overwhelmingly petrol-powered, with only 20 hybrids and 2 electric vehicles available during this period. Five-seaters dominate the mix at 97 listings, while larger 7-to-12-seat vehicles are scarce but available for group travellers. Those seeking the best deals should target compact or economy categories and consider off-airport suppliers to avoid location surcharges.
