Daylight saving only just landed in Auckland City, and suddenly the evenings stretch past 7.30pm, gold light on the Waitematā Harbour. Early October is shoulder season: cherry blossoms out in the Domain, and skies that famously run four seasons in one day. Travellers chasing a spring road trip before the summer rush are out in force, and the Auckland City car rental counters at the airport can feel it. If you want one of the cheap Ezi SUVs, move fast; with four cars already gone, the bargains won't see out the week.
Seven of the eleven cars are hybrids, and the deals cards run almost entirely on 2WD, which is all you need around Auckland in spring.
